Frequently Asked Questions

How do I look after my new board?

Caring for your new board is easier than doing the dishes.  Simply wipe down with a damp cloth after use and allow it to air dry. Do not soak or put in the dishwasher. To keep the board performing at its best, regularly apply food safe oil or our Board Balm. For more detailed instructions go to our Board Use and Maintenance page.

In your 'Who We Are' page you mention that your products make a life changing impact. What’s the impact?

At Onboard Woodshop we don’t believe in blowing our own trumpet. However those who choose to journey with us will discover the impact each product makes.

I hear plastic boards are more sanitary and easier to clean compared to wooden chopping boards. Why should I choose a wooden product?

There’s no doubt that new plastic is easier to clean and keep sanitised, hence hospitals are filled with them. However plastic boards need to be regularly replaced as they develop deep grooves which trap bacteria and therefore become difficult to clean properly. They also score easily and no doubt you’ll be consuming slivers of plastic in your meals when they separate from the main board.

On the other hand, wooden chopping boards possess antibacterial properties that make them naturally hygienic, both now and in the long run.

You make two different types of boards: end grain and face grain. What's the difference?

The biggest difference is the orientation of the wood used in production. When you’re looking at a tree, the face/edge grain is what you’ll see; end grain is what you’ll see on the ends of a log if you were to chop the tree down.

Ok... so what's the real world difference in how the two grain types affect chopping board construction?

End grain boards are generally thicker than face/edge grain and are therefore less likely to warp over time.  End grain boards help keep your knives sharper and are self-healing. This means that your boards not only look better over time but are more sanitary.

I’ve seen boards that have 'juice grooves' and 'finger grooves'. Do your boards come with these features?

Here at Onboard Woodshop we believe in being as environmentally conscious as possible, and minimising waste. Cutting grooves into the boards reduces the board's cutting surface, makes the board more difficult to keep clean and creates loads of dust during construction. All our boards come with feet and our Rey boards have small finger chamfers which makes finger grooves unnecessary. However if you would like finger or juice grooves in your board please contact us and we’ll custom make a board to your requirements.

Can I order a board without the feet?

Yes, but we do recommend the feet, as the feet help air circulate around the board which minimises the likelihood of the board warping. It also makes the board easier to handle, protects the bottom of the board and helps stabilise the board on the kitchen bench. If you would like your board without feet please contact us before placing your order.

Do you make custom boards?

Yes, but with some reservations. Please contact us to see what we can offer you.
